Our emotional boundaries, torn a bit,

feel like a child’s ramshackle living room fort,

old comforters draped over chair backs.

We hide inside for a turn of respite,

to contemplate our pearls, a bit dis-configured,

formed by chewing on shards of inherited porcelain,

by complaints and negative news and family drama,

discontent forming into something beautiful.

Maybe then we can see the gifts we’ve been given,

and grow into the better place we’ve cultivated.
